Giacomo Segantin, Appunti per un film sull’oblio, 2025
Inkjet print on photographic paper, 35x26cm
In making something we might have cleared a place for encounter - and the gap produced, the distance itself, might be the thing. This is the texture of distance, the price of sight. Quiet now.
Niamh O’Malley
On the occasion of Artissima 2026, Main Section, Artopia Gallery presents a dialogue between the artists Elena Mazzi (Reggio Emilia, 1984), Niamh O’Malley (Co Mayo, 1975) and Giacomo Segantin (Abano Terme, 1995). Their practices, although articulated on different scales of action and languages, from photography to sculpture and drawing, are united by a personal and focused view that nevertheless stems from a shared gaze and knowledge.
Elena Mazzi’s visual alphabet conceals a deep holistic feeling seamlessly intertwined with militant positions. Science and anthropology, botany and sociology are condensed into an eclectic yet organic artistic production. In it, the need for harmony with nature and other species passes through the recognition of the importance of community as the only true core of the individual, without ever neglecting a whistle-blowing attitude of contemporary social injustices, from gender to climate.
Niamh O’Malley’s works, act as offerings of stability within spatial contexts. They are the result of minimal actions that “hold things together”, moments of silent coexistence that evoke shattered memories and ruptures, but also episodes from a familiar, landscape-like microcosm that re-emerge as fragments.
Giacomo Segantin’s works reveal layers of architecture, biological elements and human actions that refer to various places around the world and express essential forms of movement. The spaces, undefined in form and function, that the artist sketches out are tributes to fragility; they urge us to live in uncertainty, to rediscover the beauty of a state of suspension and anticipation, in which life can determine its own course.
